AN INTERVIEW WITH MARICELA

We sat down with Brighton designer Maricela Palacios to learn more about her best-loved Pretty Tough Collection as well as what inspires her.

Was there someone or something that specifically inspired you when you came up with the idea for the Pretty Tough Collection? (If yes, can you describe?)

What inspired the Pretty Tough collection was Fashion and growing up and living in a city as exciting as Los Angeles with such a big music, art and fashion scene. The 1980’s and 90’s were such an influence on me because I went to every possible concert with various music genres and FASHION was a huge part of that. I remember stud ornamentation was big then and still continues to be a decorative element that adds excitement to your wardrobe. I thought it would be great to add studding to a handbag, but a handbag that would be classic enough to wear everyday and speak to a wide audience. That first handbag was “Andie”, it remained in the line for quite a while.

What Pretty Tough pieces do you wear the most?

I personally love the Pretty Tough Bold Heart necklace and the Pretty Tough Chain collar necklace, I always get compliments on them. I also love the “Jaxon” tote handbag in Olive, it’s chic but classic and just the right size.

How do you see the Pretty Tough Collection evolving?

How I see evolving the Pretty Tough collection, is by freshening up silhouettes and on the handbags I recently updated the Brighton hardware. Pretty Tough was born in 2010 and so this tells me don’t totally fix what’s not broken, just update it. I always keep in mind, make things fashionable but practical and most important wearable.
