Catherine Hong’s fascination with flora and fauna stretches into her childhood – but her trip to Australia launched a new wave of inspiration.

Catherine first hand sketches and then paints Australian wax flowers.

At the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Catherine was mesmerized by the sheer number of flowers she’d never seen before. She captured their magic in a small notebook.

A skilled artisan (with a steady hand!) applies both opaque and transparent enamels for visual effect.

Catherine draws out the design and color pattern for the embroidery machine.

The Betty Bucket Bag has 57,300 stitches embroidered on wax embossed canvas.
